About the Role
We’re looking for a hands-on technical lead to fully own backend systems that power Ami’s core experience. You will be our fifth engineer, and our first engineer focused on optimizing location, personalization, and matchmaking services.
Primarily, you will use our social graph and location data to improve the product in an ethical and privacy-aware way. A successful person in this role will own this end-to-end; you will be responsible for finding patterns in our data, thinking of creative hypotheses and solutions, and implementing them.
You’ll join a small, tight-knit team of experienced founders, engineers, and designers building a new category of consumer social product with global potential. This role offers the opportunity to directly shape the most defining aspects of the Ami platform.
Key Responsibilites
Architect, develop, and maintain Ami’s real-time location-based social app
Integrate internal and external data sources to enhance system accuracy
Design internal tools and dashboards to monitor, analyze, and improve data quality
Conduct deep technical research to find novel solutions to problems facing location-based social apps
Ensure secure handling of all user data and lead privacy-aware system design
Raise the bar on innovation, performance, and engineering standards
Key Requirements
Proven experience building and scaling data-driven systems in production environments, ideally at fast-moving startups
Strong proficiency in Python, with experience building backend or data-driven systems
Strong technical depth with backend systems and real-time data processing
A track record of self-directed work and ownership within small, collaborative teams
You’re excited to work on-site in NYC with our core team (this role is in-person only — relocation support available)
A commitment to responsible data handling and user privacy
Preferred Experience
Building real-time location tracking or geolocation-based systems
Working on consumer-facing apps where location plays a central role
Designing or implementing secure and privacy-aware systems for sensitive user data
Contributing in early-stage startup environments, taking ownership across multiple responsibilities
Experience with machine learning, recommendation, matchmaking, or personalization systems is a plus
